Glass artist
María Torrendell
Each piece is a conversation with the material.
I work with glass in a kiln and I almost never know what to expect when I open its door. Years pass and glass continues to draw me in powerfully: a material as fragile as it is strong and enduring in time, as noble and recyclable as it is transparent and subtle. For me it is a symbol of resilience, a mixture of protection and exhibition, and above all a great medium for expressing myself.
My process is mostly based on experimentation. Perhaps because I am a biologist, I was trained in research, which is why I enjoy trying new techniques and aesthetic approaches. I find this surprise of opening the kiln deeply exciting.

"I love the way her sculptures evolve: first the pointed endings softened, then they slightly flattened, then came the pregnancies, full of things inside... Later they learned to write, and now, as their hair grows, they tell stories."
"Congratulations on your successful development and continued growth as a creative force in the art world. Your new marble and glass sculptures are very well designed and reflect the fragility, permanence and natural elegance inherent in these materials."
